The Cold

Published Thursday 22nd February, 2007 by Skrik

We have a gale blowing at the moment, which means the wind-chill is quite severe. The effective temperature is -35°C. Despite my sitting inside, not 3m from the paraffin heater that usually heats the whole house, and which is now turned up full blast, I am cold. My fingers are cold, and my toes are cold, and I can hear the howling wind above the music playing on the computer.

Going outside in this kind of temperature is an interesting experience. I begin to freeze almost immediately - my legs going numb, and the muscles in my face growing stiff from the cold, eventually leading to frost damage in the skin. The moisture in my nose freezes, shooting what feels like an icicle up my nostrils as I breathe the frigid air in.

Lastly, static electricity has become something of a nuisance. The air is so cold that it cannot hold moisture, which means that static builds up to an annoying level in wool/ synthetic clothing. When grounded, the resulting shocks cause more than negligible discomfort.
