Norway is a land of Christmas and new-year traditions. The same TV programmes are shown year after year, for example. One of these programmes, sent on new year’s eve, is a Norwegian production of Franz Arnold and Ernst Bach’s three-act farce, Die spanische Fliege, from 1913. It is very funny, very entertaining. It doesn’t constitute the biting satire of Oscar Wilde’s comedies, but it doesn’t suffer for that. A production would make a very pleasant night at the theatre.
It took me a relatively long time to find out that the play is German, and that Arnold and Bach wrote it. Given the British penchant for comedy, I was surprised to find that it has not yet been produced in English. Apparently, it has not even been translated. I’m sure such a work would be successful on the British stage.
