Microsoft Windows Vista: $239.00; Ubuntu Linux: $0.00.

My experience tells me that Ubuntu is as stable an operating system as any other out there, and that it in no way falls short of the technical accomplishments of the current Windows version.

That $239 will feel much better in my pocket than in the pockets of the millions(?) of MS shareholders around the world.

  1. More importantly, it is founded on the GNU+Linux operating system (“Ubuntu” is the name of the distribution). The GNU operating system is software libre which means you have the freedom to share, study, and modify the software if you so choose. See gnu.org for more information.
